How does it hold up as an album? #pinkfloyd #albumreviews #historyofrock Pink Floyd is without a doubt one of the greatest classic rock bands of all time. They began in the 60s with Roger Waters on bass, Nick Mason on drums, Richard Wright on organ and Syd Barrett on lead guitar and vocals. Syd was the band's leader and chief songwriter in the early days, penning their first singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play. This would lead to the release of their 1967 album Piper at the Gates of Dawn, featuring classics like Astronomy Domine, Flaming, Bike and the epic psychedelic instrumental Interstellar Overdrive. Their live shows were equally inventive incorporating unique light shows. However due to Syd's intake of LSD mixed with a breakdown involving schizophrenia, he would gradually be pushed out of the band he fronted, being replaced with David Gilmour on guitar. This would become Pink Floyd's classic lineup with Roger taking more of a songwriter role, including the song Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun which would appear on their 1968 album A Saucerful of Secrets. The album was the only to feature all five band members and Syd's final composition with Floyd, Jugband Blues. Their soundtrack to More came out in 1969. On Ummagumma, Pink Floyd was still finding their voice, focusing more on albums rather than singles, but still producing an occasional classic like Careful with that Axe Eugene. In 1970, Atom Heart Mother proved to be a success with the 23 minute instrumental and featuring Dave's song Fat Old Sun. 1971's Meddle would turn out to be an important staple for the band with the rocking opener One of these Days I'm Going to Cut You Into Little Pieces, featuring a rare spoken vocal by Nick, Roger's echoing bass line and Dave's Slide Guitar. The flip side, another 23 minute piece, Echoes, featuring Dave and Rick on vocals, is often regarded as Progressive Rock's finest moment, from the opening ping of Rick's leslie piano. They would also perform both these songs along with earlier classics Live at Pompeii. The Obscured by Clouds soundtrack appeared in 1972 with tracks like Burning Bridges and Free Four. However 1973's Dark Side of the Moon would become one of the most successful albums of all time, staying on the charts for nearly 13 years and still a best seller today. Roger's lyrics dealt with the evils of society driving one to madness, while the music was nearly one entire inter-connected piece (making it difficult to separate for a playlist or a best of / greatest hits compilation). Still standouts like Money, Time and Great Gig in the Sky are favorites among fans. Their 1975 followup Wish You Were Here, featuring the opening and closing piece Shine On You Crazy Diamond (a tribute to Syd Barrett who even showed up at the sessions), is thought to be equally great, if not greater, as Dark Side. But tensions between the band were beginning to rear their head. 1977 saw the release of Animals, likening three animals: Dogs, Sheep and Pigs to various classes of society. Roger became the band's main frontman and sole songwriter with Dave occasionally sharing the mic and writing credits. Tensions grew during the tour when Roger ended up spitting on a fan in Montreal and coming up with the idea for The Wall to separate himself from the audience. 1979 would see the release of The Wall, the album and later the tour and film. Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 became their best selling single and Comfortably Numb remains one of their most popular tunes. But it nearly broke up the band as Roger fired Rick for lack of output, creating a greater rift between him and Dave. 1983's The Final Cut was Roger's final album with Pink Floyd before he officially left, leaving Dave and Nick to reunite with Rick for 1987's Momentary Lapse of Reason. Roger sued to break up the band, but failed to do so instead focusing on his solo career. The Gilmour led Floyd would produce 1994's The Division Bell, a return to form for many fans with Rick now sharing vocal and songwriting duties again. It wasn't until 2005's Live 8 concert when Dave, Nick and Rick reunited with Roger for a short set giving closure for many fans. Syd died in 2006. Rick died in 2008. The album The Endless River was dedicated in his honor. Pink Floyd's legacy has continued to inspire fans and aspiring musicians, myself included.

I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT!! This song blew my mind! The Lyrics are unreal and the musicality was NOT what I was expecting. I've always seen people wearing Pink Floyd t shirts and Pink Floyd posters and Pink Floyd Art but never heard the Pink Floyd music before. So here is me an Irish Girl Reacting to Pink Floyd For the First Time Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown Waiting for someone or something to show you the way Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say Home, home again I like to be here when I can And when I come home cold and tired It's good to warm my bones beside the fire Far away across the field The tolling of the iron bell Calls the faithful to their knees To hear the softly spoken magic spells Check out the featured video on the Pink Floyd Remasted Songs Channel at 🤍 SONG Time ARTIST Pink Floyd ALBUM The Dark Side of the Moon Join this channel as a member to get access to perks: 🤍 Join Diane's inner circle of lovely humans & get access to behind the scenes videos, bonus videos and influence the channel. I put on the headphones and a record on the turntable. When I turn the lights out I can only see the red glow coming from the turntable’s light. I listen to Pink Floyd, but it is a particular passage that puts me in a different place: the sound of the opening bars of “Sheep” off the album “Animals”. I feel far away, alone, sad but safe in the flat and endlessly green countryside near Grandma’s house, where I would fly kites as a young boy. In late 2017, undergoing many cancer treatments in a hospital in Cologne, I remember this music, played by the late Richard Wright on a Fender Rhodes electric piano. This is where my story of “More Pink Floyd” starts and ends, at a point in my life where thoughts about dying and my teenage memories of Pink Floyd entangle like the 2 strings in a DNA. In the following months I sit down with a grand and electric piano, organ, ukulele, guitar, synthesizer or code editor and make this album. “More Pink Floyd” becomes a soft psychedelic solo instrumental record with more Pink Floyd-ian harmonies, more 1960s experimentation and, wait there is more, a 1970s comfortably numb, but melancholic, haze over a faraway island. It is a concept album, perhaps a soundtrack, with connections to the past: 2 tracks are named after the 2 members of Pink Floyd that have passed. My own psyche deteriorates and falls apart in 2018, and so does this album sink into the netherworld of the disjointed mind until it is welcomed to the “machine” of the UNI-Center, only to be spit out on the other end next to a cow in Syd Barrett's flat in London, England. “More Pink Floyd” signifies this text with bookends, perhaps tiny doses of humor and it does all via lucid remembering of these words of Roger Water’s wisdom: “You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to, so when they turn their back on you, you’ll get a chance to put the knife in”. 🤍 | 🤍

ABOUT HEY HEY RISE UP 'Hey Hey Rise Up', released in support of the people of Ukraine, sees David Gilmour and Nick Mason joined by long time Pink Floyd bass player Guy Pratt and Nitin Sawhney on keyboards, all accompanying an extraordinary vocal by Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Ukrainian band Boombox. All proceeds go to Ukrainian Humanitarian Relief. This is the first new original music that they have recorded together as a band since 1994’s The Division Bell. The video for ‘Hey Hey Rise Up’ was filmed by acclaimed director Mat Whitecross and shot on the same day as the track was recorded. David Gilmour “We recorded the track and video in our barn where we did all our Von Trapped Family live streams during lockdown. It's the same room that we did the 'Barn Jams' with Rick Wright back in 2007. Janina Pedan made the set in a day and we had Andriy singing on the screen while we played, so the four of us had a vocalist, albeit not one who was physically present with us.” The artwork for the track features a painting of the national flower of Ukraine, the sunflower, by the Cuban artist, Yosan Leon. The cover of the single is a direct reference to the woman who was seen around the world giving sunflower seeds to Russian soldiers and telling them to carry them in their pockets so that when they die, sunflowers will grow. 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon' celebrated with new box set available March 24. Pre-order here: 🤍 Grantchester Meadows is a Roger Waters song, originally performed solo on the ‘Ummagumma’ album, that celebrates the English countryside, as in other compositions such as ‘Time’. This special group performance, taped for the BBC, with acoustic guitars and vocals from Roger Waters and David Gilmour, plus additional piano from Richard Wright and taped songbirds, successfully evokes a summer’s day in Grantchester, a small village close to Cambridge, England. Grantchester’s famous former residents include the Edwardian poet Rupert Brooke, who moved there and subsequently wrote a poem of homesickness entitled ‘The Old Vicarage, Grantchester’. Taken from ‘The Early Years 1965 – 1972’.
