We are so excited to start using this Mic for all our guitar and instrument videos! In this Episode Ryan showcases the the VR1 Ribbon Mic by sE. Have a listen as he plays through a 1969 Marshall Super Lead, 1961 Fender Concert and a Two Rock Custom Reverb Signature 3. All guitar audio recorded using the sE VR 1 Voodoo Ribbon Mic on its own as well as paired with a Shure SM57. Ryan had ordered the VR1 for personal use and with Music Junction but we were pleasantly surprised when the team at sE Australia(Sound and Music Australia) generously offered to send us out a unit to use. The VR1, a passive ribbon to bring out the bite and edge from your guitar cabs with no muddy highs. The VR ribbon microphones from sE mark a new era for ribbon mic technology. Until the VR Series, the only ribbon mic in the world to perform across 20Hz-20kHz was our own Rupert Neve collaboration, the RNR1. This was achieved using state-of-the-art custom transformers and a Rupert Neve-designed circuit to reveal HF usually absent. With the VR mics, full frequency response is achieved using a clever mechanical device designed by Siwei Zou, the company CEO, and a hand-tensioned ribbon constructed by our highly specialized technicians in sE's capsule room. The result is a superbly detailed, open and natural recording of acoustic instruments and guitar cabs. The VR1 & VR2's ability to perform - coupled with their unique look - have already made them a secret weapon for top musicians and engineers worldwide. Golden Age Project R1 MKII Passive Ribbon Mic - 🤍 Sontronics SIGMA 2 Phantom-powered Ribbon Microphone - 🤍 sE Electronics VR2 Voodoo Active Ribbon mic - 🤍 Ready for some science? A ribbon microphone uses a very thin piece of electrically conductive metal (ribbon) placed between the poles of a magnet. As a sound wave enters the mic, the ribbon vibrates, producing a voltage by a process called electromagnetic induction. This voltage can then be converted via an audio interface to a digital binary signal, which is what you hear from your DAW. Today, we travel to Kind Lion Sound in Nashville to look at a useful drum mic technique! Danny Halpren (MON Engineer - CMA & ACM Award-Winning, Carly Pearce) shows us how to set up and squash a “knee mic” to add an explosive element to a drum mix. In studio environments, Danny uses a VR1 passive ribbon mic for the job. On stage, a V7 X supercardioid dynamic is the mic of choice. The knee mic is a placement just above the kick drum on the batter side, primarily capturing kick and snare attacks. Positioned to pick up less of the hi-hat and cymbals, the knee mic technique allows the engineer to add character while pushing the kick and snare further towards the front of a mix. Check out the video! Danny showcases the placement, compression, and blending techniques that make a knee mic worth considering! Have you experimented with the VR1 passive ribbon mic? The VR1's full frequency response is achieved using a clever mechanical device designed by Siwei Zou, the company CEO. Along with a hand-tensioned ribbon constructed by our highly specialized technicians in sE's capsule room, the VR1 is perfect for capturing everything from acoustic guitar to vocals with a frequency response, unlike any passive ribbon! Huge thanks to Tone Tailors for capturing this epic performance. More on the VR1: 🤍 More on Tone Tailors: 🤍

Here is a quick demo of a pair of sE Electronics VR1 Voodoo Passive Ribbon Microphones as room mics on my drums. These are set up as a spaced pair, about 6 feet apart, about 10 feet away from the kit. They are bi-directional, with the null of the mics pointing towards the kit to capture more of the room sound. Compression is the Slate FG-Stress (Distressor emulation) plugin. I am head over heels for these mics. When I first plugged them in and heard them through my in-ears, I thought, “Oh, so that’s how room mics should sound!” Seriously cool.
